I experimented with a lot of different kinds of art in 2023 and 2024. I’ve been curious about what I like about art, what I feel makes it an engaging and enriching experience. I love to make art that is engaging, interactive, and fantastical. Art that draws you in and gives you something beyond reality to interact with.
How to Befriend a Mermaid
I made the How to Befriend a Mermaid zine to explore the idea of making art tangible and imaginative. Do people really need advice on how to befriend a mermaid? No, unfortunately, the existence of mermaids is only one of many examples of where art and reality can diverge. Do I believe that anyone, including sensible and reasonable adults, can enjoy a zine about friendship that inspires the imagination? Absolutely. The instructive tone of the zine gives the reader a sense that befriending a mermaid is as simple as going down to a beach, and keeping in mind the set of friendly tips the zine provides. When whimsy becomes ordinary, the ordinary can be made to feel whimsical. Readers will also find the zine applies to more than just mermaids. If a person can find befriending a creature as wild and strange as a mermaid, maybe the idea of befriending your neighbor will seem much more achievable. After all, you have far more in common with your neighbor than a fish.
