Art from 2024 – Occult
Another collection from 2024.
One of my favorite pieces I did in 2024 is in this collection. It’s the one with the young wizard and his mentor. (It doesn’t exactly have a name. I know, I’m very bad at naming my art.) As much as I would really love to be considered respectable and cool as an artist, I keep finding myself drawn to cozier, softer visuals. Not that those styles are not cool or respectable, they are! Nowadays, many different styles have become popular and it doesn’t feel so much like certain styles will be expected to adhere to certain topics or audiences. However, as a kid I got the impression that bright colors and soft character designs were meant solely for children’s media, and if I wanted to make art ‘for grown-ups’ I’d have to disregard what interested me and learn a more grown-up style. I was wrong, of course, but I’m still unlearning that old assumption. I imagine there are a lot of people out there who still think that way, but that’s alright. I create the art that inspires me. People are going to feel how they want about it, and I leave that up to them.

This collection also spans some time where my skills improved greatly. Some of this is due to my inclusion of some art from 2023, but mostly it is due to a lot of practice. I spent a lot of time trying to improve this last year.

(Below- left) This piece is technically unfinished. It has minimal light and shadow, and is clearly a rough sketch. However, I think it is perfect. Maybe I could make the scene more dynamic and feel more complete if I took the time to finish it now, but at the time I remember stopping and looking at my rough draft and thinking something about it was incredibly satisfying. Even though in some ways it is incomplete, I feel that it needs no improvement.
